Last day in Alba

4/4/18

Another gloomy drizzly day but we had yet to go to Barolo. There is a wine museum, a corkscrew museum and a tasting room there so there was plenty do do out of the rain. Or so one would think.
Barolo castle. Actually, it's called Castello Falletti

Castle Gate
The enoteca (tasting room) is closed on Wednesday's (and yes, today IS a Wednesday.)
The wine museum turned out to be the strangest museum we have ever visited. It was very dark, the signs telling you which way to go are confusing, and the exhibits were both uninformative AND uninteresting. They were almost cartoonish and also interactive in that there were handles to turn to provide more uninteresting and uninformative information. The corkscrew museum was more straightforward....corkscrews through history and at the end we were able to taste some Barolo's, the oldest that we tasted was 44 years old and sold for $500/bottle. We bought a case of it, of course....haha!

Small sampling of the hundreds of corkscrews
Now we needed some lunch so we went back to the place where we had Easter lunch since we were in the neighborhood. I actually remembered to take some photos before it was half gone.
Tajarin with meat sauce

Squid ink pasta with prawns

Also had an excellent green salad with a lot of nice additions and some nice wine, of course. We had a couple other places on our list to check out on the way home; a castle and another small town but the rain and fog were pretty unpleasant at this point so we just did a drive by.
Misty view

Back in Alba we went out in the rain to get a couple of gifty items that are only available in Piedmont. One of the places we stopped was a store that sells truffles among other items. We found out that there is a white truffle that is found between Jan-April that is much less expensive than the usual white truffle that is found in the fall. The winter one has a much less "truffley" aroma and sells for a very much reduced price compared to the truffles of the fall. Our new info for the day. As we walked we saw a truck unloading a giant piece of cow to the local butcher.

And that was it for the day (except for the plan to hit the pizza place if we're hungry later.) And indeed we wanted pizza so we went to the place downstairs from the apartment aaaannnnnd.....closed on Wednesday. Found another place walking distance so we had our pizza though not as good as the one we had had at the place that was closed. Packing was begun to be ready to move in the morning and that was it for the day.
